Privacy Policy for Orbit

Last updated: January 8, 2026

Overview

Orbit is committed to protecting your privacy. This privacy policy explains our data practices for the Orbit music server application.

Self-Hosted Software

Orbit runs entirely on your own hardware. Your music library, metadata, and all configuration data remain on your computer or server. We have no access to your system or any data you create with Orbit.

Data Collection

We do not collect any data. Orbit does not phone home, send telemetry, or transmit any information to our servers. There are no analytics, no usage tracking, and no crash reporting sent to us.

Third-Party Services

Orbit can optionally connect to external services for metadata enrichment. These connections are made directly from your server to these services:

  • MusicBrainz — For album and track identification
  • Discogs — For vinyl pressing information (requires your own API key)
  • OpenOpus — For classical music metadata
  • fanart.tv — For artist images (optional)
  • Spotify — For library comparison (optional, requires your authorization)

Each integration is optional and can be disabled. When enabled, these services receive only the queries necessary for metadata matching. Refer to each service's privacy policy for their data practices.

Local Data Storage

All data created by Orbit is stored locally on your system:

  • Your music library database (SQLite or PostgreSQL)
  • Cached metadata and artwork
  • Your ratings, tags, and preferences
  • Vinyl pressing and equipment chain documentation
  • Play history and statistics

License Validation

Orbit validates your license key at the time of activation. This is a one-time check that verifies your license is valid. No personal information is transmitted during this process, and no ongoing connection to our servers is required after activation.

Updates

Orbit may check for available updates. This check transmits only your current version number to determine if an update is available. No personal information or usage data is included.

Data Sharing

Since we do not collect any data, we do not share, sell, or transfer any data to third parties.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date.
